An interesting letter in today's ST online forum with regards to the issue of keeping cats and dogs in HDB flats. The writer basically used the information listed on the AVA website to counter the reasons HDB gave to support their ban on keeping cats as pets. AVA on pet ownership (including cats) HDB on why cats are banned I am so waiting to see how HDB actually replies. My guess will be that they will thank the people who contributed to the debate; quote the current policy; say that they will look into reviewing the current policy before ending by asking those people who still have their concerns to contact them. The best outcome (at least for animal lovers) will be that they immediately lift the ban, but that is something that I doubt will happen in such a short time. Anyway, the issue does not seem big enough for some massive action taken on the part of HDB. The reason for this is simply because there is fair too little coverage on it. Yes, there has been around 10 letters in the past couple of weeks, but the debate has mainly been in the online forum section. Unless the debate is taken up and covered in the main section or the main forum section, will I say that issue is deemed important enough by the various parties to really sit down and take action. However, it will be foolish on the part of HDB to dismiss the entire debate and I think it is high time for them to give the people concerned a very good explanation. With today's article, it will be really interesting to see how they will defend their policy considering even the AVA (albeit indirectly through their pamphlets) are saying that cats make indoor pets. he spoke at 9:09 am
