I have just met the rudest person I have encountered since I came and the honour goes to a staff at the local post office.
When I received a package from my sister, I realised that the envelope had been opened and the content missing. The accompanying package from the post office was that the package was ripped open accidently by the sorting machines. Well, that may be a possibility but how do you explain the packet in the envelope which contain this metal round magnet (which would feel like a coin or pendant if you felt the envelope) was also opened. A possibility for that is that the content fell out of it, but the packet was securely sealed with a sticky tape.
Going by their theory, the machine ripped open the envelope, somehow managed to undo the sticky tape (the packet did not appear to have been ripped) on the package and the content fell out. If that is the case, why than is the packet still in such a nice condition and how in the world did it remain inside the envelope with the packet still folded. If the content did drop out, would the fold not be undone?
Anyway, I went into the post office and told the lady politely that I THINK that the content was stolen. Before I could continue, she shouted at me saying that I should not jump the gun and accuse them when it was the machine that ripped open the envelope. I than told her (still politely) about the packet inside. She looked at it and retorted, you wait, I will get my manager to deal with you (something along those words).
When her manager came out, she told him to get me aside so that I will not obstract her serving other customers. Thankfully the manager was friendly and he again told me that it was the machine that ripped the envelope. Again I showed him the packet and of course, he had no proper explanation for that. He than tried to get me to call the customer service. I told him that they were the ones that told me to go to the post office to get it investigated! He then got me to fill up a form (which I had to tell him what the customer service asked me to get a form from them).
I really do not know how these people work. Maybe it is because some other international students spolit the market by kicking up a fuss and accusing them of missing items. Hence they get so paranoid when something like this happens. But still, they should really handle the situation more professionally and shouting certainly does not help. In fact, some people might consider shouting as an admission of guilt. Come on, if there is nothing to hide, why shout? Just calmly talk to the person and they will understand.
