Thank you

Yup, regardless of the result of tonight's match, I think Li Jiawei has done Singapore proud. Yes, the result last night is to a certain extent what ST considers sayang, but the effort and grit that she has shown to reach this far, that's enough for me. That to me is what sets her apart from all the Singaporean athletes. I believe that this Olympics will only make her stronger. Come 2008, the gold calls us. Great players have to go through such heartache and pain to reach great heights. At least that's what I feel.

Winners... regardless of the result

They have rally won the world over with their determination and progress.

They are none other the football team from Iraq. A team that has risen like a phoenix. A team that rose from the ashes of war and oppression. A team that deserves attention. If the Olympics is all about celebrating humanity, these are the people who fully deserve a medal for that. A team who's main training ground is used as a military carpark has stunned the world by reaching the semi finals. The team is in my opinion a true united nations team. Why? Simply because it is made up of Kurds, Sunnis and Shiites. Yup, that's right, it's made up of players who supposed can't stand each other. They are supposed to be warring sides, but in the name of sports, they set asie their differences to come compete. Hopefully, the whole of Iraq can see this and realise that they are better off helping each other than fighting. A united Iraq can do what the world can do, if not even better. Look no further but in Greece, where a small contingent is showing jut that.

A remarkable recovery

They say that only champions can rebound from a set back and dig deep and find the motivation and will to overcome the odds to prevail victorious.

Damn it. They were right. Justine Henin-Hardenne may already be world number one in women's tennis but one got to realise that she has been down with a viral infection for the past month or two. Coming back to take the gold and dropping only one set along the way, how to do explain that? Especially when most of her opponents have the benefit of having much more court time prior to the Olympics.

New leadership. Same result

The might Italians are mighty no more. It was only 10 years ago that they lost narrowly to Brazil during the World Cup. Look at them now, no longer a force to be reckon with. A country filled with talent that really, not many countries can match, but look at their state now. Never expect that I'll ever say this but their current state is just pathetic. The Azzurris are longer what they used to be. They really need some thing or somebody to jolt them and wake them from their slumber. They can slumber no more. At the rate they are going, I really wonder if they can even qualify for the next World Cup, let alone win it. They used to be so stong in defense and could even make an art form out of it, but these days, even their defense is questionable. Who would have ever thought that Iceland would have so comprehensively beaten them 2-0. It's really like Singapore beating Japan 2-0 at our own national stadium.

Silver lining

I think Man Utd should just buy players from only one club. And that club would be none other than Leeds. At least they should have done it more often. Look at the players they buy from them. First it was King Cantona than Rio Ferdinand and now Alan Smith. One thing in common, they can really make a big difference. With so many key players out and when they are badly in need of a player who can lead them out of the crisis, who steps up and can assume that responsibilty? It's none other than Alan Smith. Three games, two beautiful goals. Two goals of sure class. This morning's match winning performance is surely what Man Utd fans expect in the near future. Wait till they get the whole team back, they will again be a force to be reckon with. Though they lost the opening game to the team that wins Toto every day, they have shown the kind of will that was sorely lacking last season. In order to be even stronger, they really need another striker and maybe defender. Now with Forlan gone, they can use that money to get another striker. The ideal situation is of course, they can a player for every department. Reason being that the squad is a tad too thin. Injury strikes and they wille in hot soup. Gone were the days that we can all say that Man Utd has enough talent to field two teams. As for Villarreal, the team that bought Mr Forlan, good luck. Spanish Division Two might be calling you back.
