Probably the most improved player

Photo

Just at the start of the year, she was like an uncut diamond. Today, she shone like a flawess jem. A diamond fit for a queen. That's how much Anastasia Myskina has come. She was a player whom I kind of expected will do well in tennis. Maybe next year or at most three years later.

But she really surprised many including myself this French Open. She seems to be an almost complete player. Throw anything at her and she some how manages to counter. She's really getting more and more impressive by the day. Nothing seems to be able to get in the way of her. Her play just seem fo graceful. It's amazing how she's able to race round the court and still manage to hit with such precision. She sort of exposed something about Venus Williams. That is Venus plays tennis without using her brain. She just hits it with strength. That's about it. Myskina just waited patiently and waited for Venus to make an error. Defensive some may say but it worked remarkably well. She sort of made a mockery out of Venus.

The final probably was a tad too lop sided. All respect to Elena Dementieva. The pressure was probably over bearing for her young shoulders. She just wasn't playing the kind of tennis she's so capable of. Her biggest problem probably showed too. That's her erractic serve. Or should I say her terrible serve. 10 double faults in a final does say a lot. But than, she has always been like this. Another Anna Kournikova? Great strokes but unthinkable serve. She still has time in a way I guess. Being 23 like Myskina, the world can still be at her feet. Improve like Myskina and a Grand Slam may beckon. She's a player whom I feel still has enormous potential.

Rising stars

This year's mixed doubles also showcased some yound talents. This time, they are really young. Who would have thought a boy who in Singapore will probably be taking his "A"s or be in Year Two Poly and a girl who will probably be taking her "O"s be Grand Slam winners. That's right, Richard Gasquet and Tatiana Golovin are only 18 and 16 respectively. Entered as a wild card entry, they stunned everyone by capping a fairy tale ending by capturing one of the most prestigious mixed doubles titles in tennis. Their style is probably brash but it proved to effective and boy are they worthy winners.

Think Golovin might just be the next tennis belle. Her shorts in the final is really one of the shortest and tightest in the tennis circuit. With her looks and all, I believe it would only be a matter of time before FHM or Maxim will come knocking at her door. But sure hope that her priority than will still be tennis
