Neutrality does not exist in the face of murder. Doing nothing to stop it is, in fact, choosing. It is not being neutral.
How a show can remind you maybe that's why it is so important to have a good journalist. A journalist who can make a difference in the lives of other. Maybe the journalist who said that was more bent on sniffing out a good story but her above quote says it all.
She's not a real journalist, but an actress who read off the lines of her script of No Man's Land. Watched it the second time on Central that say. Though watched it almost a year or two ago, I still remember very clearly what happened on that day. Seems as if it had just happened not too long ago. Still remembered went to Pizza Hut for dinner and by the time dinner was served, we had to finish it and walk to Lido in less than half an hour. The pizza was a stuff crust if my memory serves me right. We entered the cinema think as the show was about to started for about three minutes or so. Sat somewhere in the middle. Don't know why also can remember it so vividly.
Ok, enough about how I caught the show. Was talking to Alvin about the show on Thursday and he is also a very big fan of it. The plot is simple and before Michael Moore came up with his movie of finding humour in serious and tragic events, there was No Man's and. The show based on the Balkan war. Specifically between a Serb and a Bosnian. The two despite being enemies ironically were trapped in the same trench. Another Bosnian was present too but he was "trapped" with a bouncing mine under him. The show depicted how the two being soldiers are really unsure on who started the war. Basically they just blamed each other for starting the war. The irony was that they committed the same things they hate each other for. Since both sides did not want to risk rescuing their own man in the trench, they decided to call on the "smurfs" who are actually UN. The show than goes on to poke fun at the red tape within Un and their non-committed attitude. UN had a French Sergeant who despite his will on wanting to help others was helpless against all the red tape. A reporter taped on the UN line found out about the two man in the trench and the man who had a mine under him. She persisted the French Sergeant to bring her to the scene. Initially UN refused to bring her to the scene and she made the powerful statement, "Neutrality does not exist in the face of murder. Doing nothing to stop it is, in fact, choosing. It is not being neutral."
Why the statement? It was obviously slamming the UN who claimed that their mission was to be neutral and will only monitor the fighting and will not take sides. That's why the statement is so strong because UN had already made a choice by choosing not to do anything but to watch the killing around them. All they did was to distribute aid, but come on, food is important but which is more important? Giving people food or to stop them from being killed. All UN did was to make sure that the people have a higher chance of being killed by a bullet or bomb than from hunger. That statement also is probably the maker's key moment, the one phrase that they want viewers to take home.
Again I will say that though I may be occasionally slam UN but I guess to a certain extent, my relationship with UN is a love hate one. It's really a case of expecting so much of them but only to have them to let you down. Would I jump on the chance to work with them? I probably will. Will probably not be able to do anything to cut all the red tape but will really like to try to make a difference and help out in an organisation as big as UN. They might have let many people and countries down, but they have helped many other people too. Their work have benefited many others. Look at Timor Leste. Must say that UN did a good job there.
Will UN make a difference in Iraq? Unlikely I guess. They do not have the capacity and all to handle such a mammoth task. They maybe more respected than US but after say six months, the Iraqis will realise that UN is unable to do much and will revolt once again. When they do that, UN will just pull out and leave the country in turmoil, something like what they did in Somalia. Really do not want to see that happen again.

Another week about to go by and must say that the past week has been a very tiring week. Stayed over at Yah Yah's house last Friday to do Feature Writing and than had advertising on Saturday. That night was super cos went for the Easter Vigil mass which was also the baptism mass. The whole mass despite being over two hours just seemed to breeze past. The whole time was just so warm. It really started the most beautiful way when the lights were turned off and the entire congregation lit their candles. Imagine an entire lit by over a thousand candles. Look around and you can see and feel the warmth of the candles. Mass started after the readings and it started with literally a bang. Bells were rang as we sang the Gloria. The smiles of the congregation could be felt from the voices of all. That mood just continued throughout the entire mass; from start to finish. Think on that day RCIY had 23 elects receiving the the sacrament of baptism.
Hope that Marseille can win the Uefa Cup. Not because I super love that team but because of Barthez. Yup, the clown of a keeper at Man U. As I had said before, I've just come to realise that he is probably one of the most if not the most loyal player Man U has ever recruited. Desipte having won almost everything a footballer can ever win in his career, he did not even complain when Fergie relegated him to third choice. Imagine that, a player who has achieved more than any player in the EPL not even deemed worthy to warm the bench. Did he complain like Beckham when he was benched a couple of games? Did he sulk? No, he just took it in his stride and even when the club terminated his service, he still insist that he has no hard feelings for the club. He went on to say that he truely enjoyed his three years stint at the Theatre of Dreams. No wonder Laurent Blanc would always kiss his head before kick off. I would too now knowing what a true sportsman he is. A sportsman who's selfless act despite being a rarity would not be commended much. Isn't it ironic when all the time, we have papers writing to lament of players being ungrateful etc and question where has loyalty gone. Here we have a true sportsman but few papers really want to cover it. Well Barthez, thank you for being such a sportsman. Just by those words of yours, you are truely forgiven for the blunders you have made. The fact that you dare come out to shoulder the blame is already so commendable.
Discovery had a show on soldiers. They interviewed some Vietnam War veterans and they said that they initially found it difficulty to kill the enemy, but after a few times, the sadistically enjoyed killing. Are humans really so evil? Or has situation evolved us to be such killers? What we don't like, we kill. Are we really that...
